I am not sure that you are accurately speaking for the entire planet. There were many different societies that were not exposed to the same amounts of alcohol as some European societies were. For instance, Native American and Native Alaskan tribes had never been exposed to alcohol, yet they were happily going about life without all the technological advances we have today. In fact, the hunter gatherer lifestyle they embraced might have still existed if it were not for the alcohol induced European land thieves. Modern advancement may have more to do with key inventions and theories by some very smart people. Issac Newton, Nicola Tesla, and governments that care about moving forward are all important factors as well.
