Why are some birds white on the bottom?

I'm watching a Mockingbird who is brown on top, and white underneath it's breast, body and wings. I understand being brown on the top would help camouflage it from predators while in the underbrush or in a nest. But what is the evolutionary purpose of it's white underbelly?
